Shocked, relieved, and accomplished are just a few of the words that come to mind when I reminisce on this past weekend. First and foremost, On behalf of the entire WSEM gang, I would like to thank Chris Gallaway and the Host Committee for all of their hard work leading up to this spectacular congregation of wiffle ball! As always, I couldn’t have asked for a better weekend!

Next, I am absolutely thrilled to have won the NWLA Tournament! This team worked hard preparing for this tournament and I couldn’t think of a better parting gift for Carl Coffee in his final year as WSEM Commissioner. Building on that, I am absolutely grateful to have been selected by Carl to lead this team and elevate WSEM to one of the elite wiffle ball leagues in the country! Ever since I joined this league four years ago, I knew it was something special and last weekend proved it! Another congratulations goes out to Stephen Farkas! Congrats on winning the NWLA MVP – you join an elite class of Wiffle-ballers such as Ryan Bush and Chris Harley! I am very proud of this league and organization for their support of this team – and I hope that they will allow me to return as manager in 2015.

Next up, I would like to extend my deepest apologies to all of those who were offended by the podcast in any way or form (Huntington Wiffle ball league)! Every year we get to meet some new people and I have to say, this years cast and crew was the best yet! The HRL and HWL crew’s were a riot as always! Carl made new #friends in Drew McClanahan, Jeremy Ray, and Brian Ball and our league FINALLY beat Tampa bay improving to 1-5 all time versus the Floridians! It feels like a relief to be on top of this tournament for the next calendar year! As we were celebrating that was the emotion both Carl and myself were feeling the most – even more so than joy. It was a relief to feel like we finally made a name for WSEM and I’m very honored to be a part of that!

Overall, It was a great weekend! I miss everyone all ready and I’m already excited to start talking about next year’s tournament! I can’t thank Commissioner Gallaway enough for all he has done and Carl for allowing me to manage the Dads! Now, I can finally sleep right for a year straight knowing that Chris Harley didn’t hit a grand slam against us, we beat up on the PWL (as usual) and that we are the champions! I can’t wait till next year!

P.S The trophy looks awfully pretty on my mantle!

I wish everyone the best of health and luck in their endeavors for the next year!

Until then, carpe diem!

Regards,

After going 2-1-1 in pool play versus Tampa Bay, Cincinnati, Hudson Valley and OCWA, and a nerve racking seeding draw, we FINALLY avoided Tampa bay in the first or second round and even in the third round! In game one of double elimination, we beat the power hitting Washburn Wiffle ball League and in game two of double elimination Farkas dominated the Potomac Wiffle ball league in his NWLA debut! We have a shot at HRL for the first time in league history tomorrow in the winners bracket semi-finals! A win there could finally put us in solid position to take this tournament! I wish this game were at a more informal setting with copious amounts of alcohol, but I guess the NWLA tournament will suffice. Also, congrats to PWL for completing their second major upset in two years knocking the highly favorite OCWA squad out of the winners bracket! I guess those “overatted?” shirts might have to be remade without the question mark attached to it! (Disclaimer: That was a joke) It’s now becoming evident to me that more and more teams are becoming competitive and that is amazing to see! I eventually hope that this tournament can become sixteen teams who are very hard to power rank because it could be anyone’s game out there! Well, time for dinner and to wash the uniforms for tomorrow – I don’t know if this hotel room smells like a morgue or a skunk died in here!

Continued best of luck to all teams in the tournament!

It is Saturday, July 19th 4:45am. Why am I up this early? Is it Farkas’ several attempts to put his leg over me while I slept? Am I still hungover from the debauchery that ensued (drinking) with the Coffee brothers and Corbett on Thursday night? Is it Bortmas’ and Hatt’s sketchiness from across the room? I think those might be some/none of the reasons why, but I’m going with the fact that the 365-day hiatus from NWLA wiffleball is finally over. The atmosphere at the practice sessions and Friday night festivities was electric last night – even in the rain! It is wet and rainy still, but that isn’t going to stop us from going out and having a blast in one hour. As I type this article, I am also filling out my lineup card for our long anticipated rematch versus CWBC, which is fittingly in the rain, again. Will we ever get to play this “club” in preferable conditions? Maybe not. Farkas is now humming in his sleep – boy this is weird. Sam Hatt made eye contact with me and went back to bed. I have already paced the halls two times this morning and contemplated writing an “Herb Brooks” style speech for when we play Tampa. I guess you can say I’m a little nervous in my first ever stint as a manager. All I can hope for is that everyone is a little bitter after our performance last year and that we build on that for this year’s tournament. Well, looks it’s getting close to wake up time for the guys, I can’t wait to see everyone in a few hours! Best of luck to all teams and Dads!

What is Pow#R?
The power number rating (Pow#R) is a mathematical formula using a team's weighted wins (wW) -- Σ(# of wins vs. opponent * (1 + opponents wining %)] --, weighted losses (wL) -- Σ(# of losses vs. opponent * (2 - opponents winning %) --, record over the last five (L5) games, and run differential (DIFF) divided by games played (GP). The equation looks like this: Pow#R = (wW - wL) + (L5) + (DIFF/GP)

2014 marks the 10 Year Anniversary of sending a team down to London, OH to play in the largest slow-pitch wiffle tournament on the planet. The London Tournament is what sparked my interest in this silly game as a young 21 year old college lad. We still use many rulestoday in WSEM that we took from London (5 foot radius circle pitcher’s poison, force out in circle for lead runner, pegging only from 3rd to Home). This will be the first year we send two teams to London, so the interest in Brian Wheeler’s tournament has only grown through the years.

The early years ('04-'05) we went to London it was in a different location than it is at today. The old location had fields with more character and quirkiness. The tournament grew so large, though, that they were forced to move it. There are still some quirky fields, but anyone who played at the original location can tell you it was better back in the day. The '04 and '05 Lugnut teams had identical records, both going 3-3.

After three years away from the tournament, we returned in 2009. This was the only time the tournament was not in mid-July, but instead was played in October. This year also was the best finish we ever had going 6-2 with three playoffs wins, and finishing somewhere inside the top 10 or 12. 2010-2013 we played and struggled, but now we return with two strong teams, with both London veterans and rookies. Before we meet the Step-dads and Superdads, here is a look at our past teams.
I don’t want to say that if I was the 3rd base coach for every game at the NWLA tournament in 2013 that the WSEM Big Wood team would have done better. I don’t want to remind everyone that I was probably the main reason why we did so well in 2012. And I definitely don’t want to guarantee that we will do a lot better, if not WIN the whole tournament this year if I’m the 3rd base coach for the new team. Unfortunately, I am going to say all of those things.

When I heard that Carl and Galloway were starting up a tournament in 2012 for some of the marquee leagues in the NWLA to determine the best of the best, I was thrilled to go. Not because I thought I had a chance to play, but because I knew that I could hang out with awesome dudes and drink all weekend. It didn’t sound too different from what I was normally doing in my life at the time, but the difference was that I could be outside and watch some great competitive wiffle ball.

When it came time to go down to Ohio for the tournament, it was hard to focus on anything else besides my triumphant return to London for the coveted “Largest Slow-Pitch Wiffle Ball Tournament in Central Ohio”. I didn’t know how much fun or how successful the first attempt of the NWLA tournament could be. Besides the great food, the amazing fields and equipment, and the convenience of the hotel location (across the street) it was great to just hang out. There was a need for a third base coach and I took on that role. We had more than enough spectators for a coaching staff at the time. Not only did our team have a 3rd base coach, 1st base coach and manager, we also had bench coach, passed ball retriever and bullpen warmer-upper. We were very prepared.

Everyone knows by now that the first tournament was a success, all the teams that were there are now returning for their 3rd year in a row for this year’s tournament and our very own WSEM Big Wood took home 3rd place! I know I didn’t contribute too-too much in their winning, but I was always the guy the players looked at when they were up to bat. I let them know how many outs there were and I held up the count and let them know the situation. I was the first person to give them a high-five after a home run and I would hold them up at 3rd or wave them home if I knew they could make it. I did not make one bad call. I did grab someone rounding 3rd going home because I was afraid they would get thrown out. It was either Hatt or Bortmas, I couldn’t really tell those guys apart anyway.

The next year was different. All the teams had bigger and better expectations. They opened the tournament up to 13 teams (12 showed up) and they weren’t going to have their tournament around the London slow-pitch tourney. I had to choose whether or not to play in London and miss the entire first day of games. Ultimately, I did choose to play in London and acted as the captain of the WSEM SeMIs. We only won one game and it was a rotten experience. I coached 3rd base for the first game Sunday morning; we lost and Big Wood was out of the tournament. The rest of the day I got black-out drunk and don’t remember anything else.

This year will be different, I still plan on getting pretty drunk (not as much as last year), but I won’t be participating in the London tournament. Paquin is going to take over that responsibility and the best of luck to him and The Step Dads. I am taking 5 days off of work and flying up for a long weekend because I know how much fun I am going to have. Thursday night in downtown Columbus will be a hell of a time! Friday, I hope to scrimmage on the London fields during the day and enjoy an awesome dinner with all the teams across the country, as well as the watch all the great festivities that evening. Let the games begin on Saturday! I don’t want to promise that I will be the 3rd base coach for every game, but if I’m around and I’m somewhat sober, I’ll do it. I’ll be that first high-five after your home run, I’ll be the guy flashing the signs and giving the count, I’ll be your crying shoulder and I’ll be the best damn 3rd base coach the NWLA has ever seen. Good luck Dads of WSEM and sYa in Dublin!

When I joined WSEM, I never could have imagined that I would meet some of my best #friends. While playing competitive Wiffle Ball is fun, the real fun comes in the times shared with some of the greatest people on Earth. People around the league, and around the community are always asking me “Hollyweird, who are your top 5 best #friends in the league?!” I usually respond with “Who are you!?” or “Wouldn’t you like to know?” Well Wiffle-Nation, I am here to answer that age old question in a little article I like to call “Hashtag #Friends.”

I will never in my life forget Jason Matt because he introduced me to a life changing league. But, what many of you do not know is that Jason Matt is actually the father of my child. Back in 2009 Jason Matt and myself were hanging out at a club and we met 2 attractive young ladies. They both seemed very disinterested in me and were all about Jason’s red beard. I pulled Jason over to the side and let him know that I would really like to have a child with the Amazon looking one, because I couldn’t get over her amazing bone structure. Without hesitation, Jason told me “Don’t worry man, I’ll take care of it.” 2 years after conception, my first born child was born and I have Jason Matt to thank for that. However, I had to give the child up for adoption because I had noticed violent tendencies in him. This was directly confirmed to be genetic after Jason Matt’s recent run in with the Seattle Police.

When playing against Onanism, you may see a shoeless Wiffle Ball player with above average looks, but when you get to actually know Nate you will find he has a story so profound you will want to cry. After our games against Onanism I had a chance to talk to Nate. I was asking all the right questions, and I could see he was holding back. When we hugged before we left, he started to sob up and shake a little. I immediately asked him what was wrong and he told me, “That was the first hug I ever received in my life.” Without knowing how to respond I started to cry and he opened up to me like never before. When Nate was a child, his mother and father left him to survive on his own from birth and he was raised in the wilderness by a pack of wild turkeys. Nate never had human contact until Kiefer asked him to join his Wiffle Ball team this year. Ever since this occurance, Nate and I have been going on “hug-dates” where we just hang out and hug a lot in public. So if you play Onanism, be sure to give Nate Motta a nice hug… you will never know how much it means to him.

Last year I faced Alex a few times and always thought he was a pretty cool guy, but not really someone I would consider a friend. My entire view changed on Alex after we were both at the same pizza parlor the night of November 2, 2013. I was just ordering a slice of pizza when I looked over both my left and right shoulder and happened to see Alex Shore surrounded by 10 females, that when added up from a scale of 1-10 in attractiveness, were somewhere around 96.8. I walked over nervously to Alex being fed pizza by these women, and said hello. After talking extensively to Alex and the women, he asked if I wanted to go back to his grandma’s house for a party with us 12. I agreed, of course. Alex packed us all into his BMW and we made the 6 hour journey to Grandma Shore’s house. After a wild night of partying and crying, Alex and I called a cab for the women and went into the bedroom for the night. It was that night of card playing, Instagram picture taking, and prank calling that Alex and I became very close and now we see each other at least 4 times a week.

Dave Buhr is an intelligent and thrilling person to be around. Dave was my first ever captain and from that bond we created something very special. The night that started it all began last year after a Belgian win over Whiteford. Dave told me that he was on such a high from the victory that he didn’t want the night to end. “I just finished Breaking Bad and you know what? I think tonight is the night I try crystal meth.” Not surprised in the least bit about this desire, I agreed to hang out and do some meth that night with Dave. After calling his meth dealing friend, Dave and myself went downtown to visit old Tiger Stadium to try to relive some of the past. We enacted every season from 1910 through 1982 that night before we saw some people trying to steal from the park. Dave and I approached the people to ask what they were doing, and one of them promptly grabbed me and pointed a gun at my head. Within seconds of this occurring, Dave pulled out his newly acquired iPhone, opened up the smart piano app, and started playing and singing a song so breathtaking, the bandits decided to release me. Dave Buhr, you saved my life and I will always love you for that.

The most important asset a team can have is a steady ace pitcher who can throw strikes. Teamed up with Kiefer Haffey, the two Onanism pitchers have given the mostly rookie expansion squad a nice 5-3 early start. Trey is responsible for three of those wins, which is tied for the league lead. Trey has a unique pitching technique as he pitches from the stretch instead of winding up. He is also a rare lefty pitcher. Trey will be given the opportunity to pitch every other game for the Onanism, and if he continues his hot start, he should easily be in the Ringler pitcher All-Star conversation.

It is probably not fair to put a pitcher who has only thrown one game on this list, but when that one game is 18 innings long and he had 41 strike outs and allowed no runs, that pitcher deserves to be on this list. The non-Constanti lookalike D’Agnese is the ace pitcher the Squirrels desperately needed in order to be competitive. His one game was truly a game for the ages, as Brandon went toe to toe against another stud rookie pitcher, Stephen Farkas. We will know a lot more about Brandon in the upcoming weeks as the Squirrels play eight games the next two weeks, and if everything falls into place, he will get four of those starts.

All Craig has done this season is go 3-1 with a 0.68 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP, and that puts him at #3?!? Yep. We have seen some outstanding pitching performances in the league, and Craig has once again shined early in the season. The reigning Clown Shu and El Diablos ace has picked up right where he left off in 2013, and I don’t ever expect him to fall off of this list for the next two additions. The Garcia division is no longer the pushover division it used to be, so Craig will really need to step up and carry the load if the ‘Blos want to repeat as division champs.

Mr. Reliable, Austin Bischoff, remains on the list to no one’s surprise. The Aces only play four games in the first five weeks, so we have a very small sample size for the defending champs in the early season. The games Austin did play were very windy, but he managed to go 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP. His six walks in only 7 2/3 innings is high for Austin, but it’s probably due to the wind. Like Craig, Austin will stay on this list all season unless his arm falls off, but where on the list is the real question? We now have the reigning Clown Shu at #3 and the National Pitcher of the Year at #2. #deargoodness

Belgian’s ace rookie has video game stats, and I always have to look at them 4-5 times to make sure they are real. In three games he already has 82 strike outs and has a WHIP of 0.30. That means on average it takes over three innings for him to allow a runner to reach base. The reality though, Farkas is currently riding a back-to-back perfect game streak where he has struck out 35 of 36 batters. Farkas does have a loss, as he gave up a home run in the 18 inning marathon game vs. the Squirrels, but to his defense he did pitch 17 scoreless innings prior to the homer. Farkas is a unique guy with silly antics, but when he is on the mound it is all business.

Some might think it would be cool to have a good wiffleball player living with you. Usually things are pretty chill, but there are definitely some disadvantages to having a brother/manager/National Wiffleball Pitcher of the Year/Clown Shu winner sleeping (literally) three feet below me (yes, it is true). These are three pros and cons of having Austin Bischoff as a brother.

Pro #1: He’s a Decent Wiffleball Player

In case you didn’t know, he’s pretty good at wiffleball. I could write a short novel of all of his wiffleball awards. Also, the kids at school think that I’m so cool because I have a brother that’s good at wiffleball. Easily the best part about all this is that we are on the same team. Unless your team has Ryan Bush, the Harley twins from TBW, Joe Seto, or the Manchester Punchouts, you probably haven’t beaten him. It’s pretty awesome to have him win almost every game (18 out of 20) he takes the mound. So, if you want a good wiffleball player on your team pretty much forever, they should have been born a long time ago.

Con #1: He’s a Wiffleball God

Yeah, it’s cool and all that he’s on my team. However, I also face him more than any other pitcher in this league. I get to risk my life and step in the batter’s box with him on the mound, knowing that I’m probably going to be sent to the bench over and over again. In my defense, on his bad days, I can occasionally get solid contact on one or two. A whole other story is when I’m on the mound. He pretty has my pitching locked in. Even when I feel like I’m pitching well, I’ve seen him hit back-to-back-to-back-to-back dingers off me on multiple times. That’s a pretty good kick to the pride if I ever felt one. Even though I will occasionally think I’m decent at wiffleball, I’m always reminded I’m not even close to being the best player in the household.

Pro #2: Dedication

You will never meet somebody as dedicated to wiffleball as Austin Bischoff. He’s always practicing and perfecting his pitching technique. When he “struggles” during a bullpen or scrimmage, he will go back and watch his own film to see what he was doing wrong. He’s quite the wiffleball addict. Sometimes he will gently (and occasionally not so gently) remind me to throw a bullpen on certain days. Truthfully, I wouldn’t be half the wiffleball player I am today if it weren’t for him. Just watching him do what he does is helpful.

Con #2: He’s Lost His Mind

Have you ever thrown a bullpen in the snow? Be thankful. When it comes to wiffleball, Austin Bischoff has no limitations. It’s a little alarming how seriously he takes wiffleball, both as a player and even as a manager. He’s told me before some starts that if I walk the first two batters, I’m going to be pulled. If I let up a run, I’m gone. Sometimes he will even expect a perfect game out of me. Maybe this is why the Wicked Aces are a good team. Maybe he’s a little bit off his rocker. Some days it’s just a little scary to think that this kid sleeps in the same room as me.

Pro #3: He Introduced Me to WSEM

Ever since he found Carl’s ad on Craigslist for a “<18 year old wiffleball pitching stud,” my life hasn’t really been the same. My time in WSEM is almost complete because of him. I would have never looked for a bigger/awesomer wiffleball league than the vintage Whiteford Wiffleball Association. I really didn’t even participate that much in the original WWA. Now I find myself playing 20+ games a year on a team consisting mostly of former opponents. On a side note, my backyard is definitely not the same either (it’s much more “dope” now).

Con #3: He is Crazy About How Things Look

I enjoy winning games as much as the next guy. I understand his desire to win the championship every year. However, it’s the appearance-related things that he will go crazy over. For example, having the best field is not a huge deal, right? Wrong. Apparently, he has a burning desire to indisputably have the most awesome field ever created. The league will have to wait until opening day, but if the plans that he has in his mind come true, he may just have that title. Also, I guess it’s a requirement to get new uniforms every year. We have two sets of blue jerseys and yellow jerseys. Yet, the league may see new uniforms again this year.

In this day and age in Major League Baseball and all pro sports, naming rights are the norm. Comiskey Park became US Cellular, Jacobs Field became Progressive Field, and the Skydome became the Rogers Centre. I have respect for the teams that turn down the money to stay true to their classic field name. In WSEM, we have 10 unique field names, so unique I even recently power ranked the names. Naming rights have yet to be attached to our fields, and that makes me a happy commish. With all of our fields already named, a new trend has started: naming objects at our fields.

The first team to name a part of their field are the Belgian Wiffles. Belgian moved from Wiff-Hill Grounds to the ‘Gian Joint and brought along their long left field foul pole. It is one of the best foul poles in the league. As the Belgian captain, I visited dozens of Southgate businesses to see if they were interested in having the foul pole named after them. I was outside Caesarland knocking on its door for 45 minutes before realizing it was closed forever. I went to MJR, Mallie’s, Chuck E. Cheese, and many other Southgate hotspots and everyone turned me down. They had zero interest in this excellent opportunity.

I was discouraged, but not defeated. I realized I was doing it wrong, and my focus on making money was bad for the team and the league. I then went to the Southgate Library and started studying the history of the city. The Belgian Wiffles were proud of their new home city, and we wanted to honor someone who was an important part of the city’s history. We thought about naming it after Richard S. Gate, the founder of the city. David Buhr ultimately turned it down, since Richard is considered a swear word in his vocabulary. We then looked at Jeff Jones, the Tigers current pitching coach and one of the most notable Southgate citizens. We found out the SGA high school baseball field was named after him, so this would have been overkill.

Finally after weeks of research, we discovered that Mark Phillips, the utility playing El Diablo father of Chandler Phillips has been a lifelong Southgater… Southgaton… Southgandian… Southgoon? We'll go with Southgoon. So, the left field foul pole has been named: Mark’s Long Pole. It's a proud moment for the team. No one's more deserving to have a long pole named after him than Mark.

The equation looks like this: Pow#R = (wW - wL) + (L5) + (DIFF/GP) + STRK
