Walk-up Themes: Vol, 2

Your Junk my Happy Zone
by Brandon Corbett

You know how this works. Remember the thought behind this is, first, an amusing anecdote about the player to hopefully get a "hah!" or "yeeep, that's him!", then - only as an accidental afterthought - the "cool" factor you would normally go for with a walk-up theme. Come to think of it, that is kind of the thought behind Wiffle all the time. Get excited; here we go!

"S.U.T.F.S."  - Dark Wave -  Chad Hoppe  -  Wiffling DeLoppes

"She underlines the fuck scenes for ya? Jesus, if she underlines the fuck scenes for ya, she must worship the ground you walk on." - Reggie "Reg" Dunlop

As a great player-coach, Chad reminds me of the above-quoted Dunlop. Not only for his fuck scene appreciation, either! In 2011 Chad took a team that had never performed well and no one gave much respect, made a few lineup additions, and boom! Instant sensations! Unlike the Chiefs, however, the DeLoppes actually became great at the game. You cannot deny the comparison of Bobby, BJ, and Nick Snow to the Hanson brothers, though.

"Sweet Release"  - Wugazi -  Chris Paquin  -  Jason Mattseals

Sweet release; that inexplicably smooth, calm and collected bit of "BOO YA!" Chris Paquin has that on the mound. He picked up a Wiffleball last Saturday, and immediately had movement that could only be described as "Chadwick-like": not a lot of speed, but pitches that turn on a dime or make you bite before they blow a kiss goodbye as they bow further and further out of reach in slow motion. For our purposes we will treat any previous contact Chris may have had with a Wiffleball as if it never happened; it makes for a much more intriguing story. Especially when Paquin throws out quotes to equal his rookie pitching arm. For instance, "Six strike-outs; put that in your book!"

"Body Shot"  - Electric Six -  Adam Grant  -  Campus Commandos

The Electric Six song in the mix again goes to a Commando! "Body Shot" is spot on for Grant, just as "Escape from Ohio" was for Pfefferle. Adam does not like to give up that inside corner while in the box, and as a result he takes a lot of balls off the torso, thighs, and groin. He also gets a league-leading amount of walks for it, though; so, that must make up for the plastic onslaught.

[As an aside: rumors of Grant's habits of lying down on bars and being the vessel for the other type of body shot are rampant, yet completely unfounded.]

"Hey Stars"  - The Juliets -  Joe Seto  -  Donkeys

Snubbed from the All-Star teams last season, by most opinions, "Hey Stars" is essentially Seto reminding all those guys who beat him out for the teams that he is coming for them this year. All Joe really needs to do is breathe heavily into the phone after saying those two words to drive this point home. However, he will more than likely back it up with surgical pitching and batter's box bravado for a less creepy effect.

Walk-up Music 2012: Vol. 1

Your Junk my Happy Zone
by Brandon Corbett

Walk-up themes! Mmmm, yeah! Let's get sexy! This year I am going to put these out in small doses, like a series of EPs throughout the year. Remember what the thought behind this is: first, an amusing anecdote about the player to hopefully get a chuckle, then - only as an accidental afterthought - the "cool" factor you would normally go for with a walk-up theme. Come to think of it, that's kind of the thought behind Wiffle all the time. Get excited, because here we go!

"I'll Tumble 4 Ya"  - Culture Club -  Jason Matt  -  Jason Mattseals

Jason is no stranger to laying out for pop flies, whether he's tracking back towards the wall or sprawling off the mound. And sometimes his eyes reach a little further than his arms, or body. Nevertheless, if he has any shot at the ball at all, Jason will tumble for ya!

"Ace is in the House"  - Tone Loc -  Mike Constanti  -  Flying Squirrels

Ever since his new captain gave him the number-one starter job with the Squirrels, reports have frequently come in of Mike traveling from club to club with an entourage that belts out "yo' ace is in the house" with each ever-more grandiose entrance. We don't expect a lowly boombox; we expect a DJ and full-on dance routine!

"Rollin' with Kid N' Play"  - Kid N' Play -  Josh Nagorski  -  Thunder Ducks

According to commissioner Coffee, Josh is a kid. According to his 2011 playoffs, Nagorski can play. He's willing to laugh off the former, especially if the low-light of the "kid" nickname can help prove the latter to his neasayers.

"Escape from Ohio"  - Electric Six -  Eric Pfefferle  -  Campus Commandos

Eric lives in Perrysburg, OH. Let's just say it; no ifs, ands, or buts... having us to get him the heck out of there is the best thing "Pfeiffer" has going on!

"I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)"  - Genesis -  BJ Hoppe  -  Wiffling DeLoppes

BJ comes to the park dressed for the big time: home white pants, road grey pants, always high-cuffed; the only way to wear your baseball pants. Sure, he could rock a song like "Sharp Dressed Man", but BJ's style is unique on the Wiffle diamond, and all you can say is, "he knows what he likes." Or that Petey G. fits better than the beards.

Plate Appearance Music

Your Junk my Happy Zone
by Brandon Corbett

Nothing pumps you up to come through in the clutch like the perfect song booming out of the speakers at your home stadium joined by the thundering crowd as you step up to the plate. It’s grandiose, over the top and that is what it is all about! Make that one moment the most important, take it to a level that is… dare I say?… epic. A duel between you and the pitcher to bring your men home safe and win one for the good guys. Everything is cooler when you up its fantastic quality!

Now, obviously pressing play on a boombox for a five second walk to the plate every appearance in wiffle is going overboard. But what if we were to indulge the fantasy for a bit here and have some fun with our players, personalities, the common occurrences and frequent follies? What songs would make the perfect momentous or ridiculous plate appearance themes for WSEM’s players?

Note that I’m not saying these would make good themes just that they fit the player’s idiom.

“Unsung” – Helmet
Nick Braden

You’re a solid player, don’t let your team down on the field, put up good stats, and come through in the clutch, yet no one sings your praises. The life of the role player can be hard and unrewarding in the public eye, but damn can you still get a heavy theme song!

“I Will Survive” – Gloria Gaynor
Maclin Malloy

Mac fouls off pitches like nobody’s business; he won’t go down without a hell of a fight. While Cake’s remake of the song would be cooler, the ridiculous atmosphere of coming up to the plate with Gloria Gaynor blaring is just too perfect to pass up… and maybe it can knock the pitcher off his game.

“Don’t Lose my Number” – Phil Collins
Bobby Hoppe

The story behind this appearance theme comes from a facebook photo comment in which Bobby’s #9 is mocked and Bobby pleads his case that it was supposed to be #96! Not being given the right number is an even bigger slap in the face to role players everywhere than not getting your contributions talked up!

“Breaking Glass” – David Bowie
David Buhr

Have we run this broken glass story into the ground yet? Who cares!? I hope we do, because if we drive it into the ground we’ll be playing that card as hard David plays the game!

“The Perfect Song” – The National
Carl Coffee

This one is all about the album cover. What does that classy man in the pool have in his hand? That’s right: a wiffleball! Sun, pool, wiffle… Yeah, that sounds pretty damn perfect. Since Carl started the whole wiffle thing around here, we’ll give him the honor of basking in the glow!

“Facing the Firing Squad” – HiFi Handgrenades
Chris Lewis

Chris gets hit by more pitches than the rest of the league combined. He is a human ball magnet… meant in the best way possible. It has gotten to the point where he has started lighting up a cigarette and blindfolding himself before every at bat. True story.

“Bulldog Skin” – Guided by Voices
Alex Shore

Alex is the first Butler fan most of us have ever met, so he is pretty much the flesh and blood manifestation of a Butler Bulldog around the league. Besides, “I waited for a proud display. I played around. I heard the sound of certain trouble on the way . I got bulldog skin. I took a car. I drove it far,” are lyrics that fit kind of well with Shore, right?

“Bombs in the Distance” – The Holy Fire
Dennis Pearson

While a lot of the focus on Dennis is given (deservingly) to his pitching arm, he is also the only player to have hit multiple home runs during Spring Training this year. Missiles on the mound, and hitting bombs at the plate: Dennis is an arsenal.

“Rubber Band Man” – Detroit Spinners (as performed by Electric Six)
Chad Hoppe

Technically the phrase is “pulled the string,” but a rubber band’s elasticity is going to whip, snap, and make the ball dance even more. “You’re bound to lose control when the rubber band starts to jam,” watch batters take swings, they nearly fall out of their shoes! String is for baseball; Chad and a wiffleball take it to the next level: rubber.

“Quiet” – This will Destroy You
Joe Seto

Joe has played in two tournaments with us and has quietly put up very good numbers. He and his stats have gone largely unnoticed around the league, but that seems to go over fine with Joe: he won’t run his mouth, he’ll just let his production on the field speak for him.

One more, not for a plate appearance, but that could be blared during our fourth inning stretch as a league wide anthem:

“Born to Run” – K-oS

Because if you’re not running the bases, you’re not having half the fun you should be out there!
