In the Cards '13 - #3 Dakota LaDouceur:

The amount of runs Dakota has knocked in over his two years in the league are only trumped by the ways in which his last name has been pronounced. La-dowch-eeyor... La-dooch-yoor... La-doych-yer... Frank... La-di-ser; no way, that last one can't possibly be right. Dakota was a co-Country Strong HR King in 2012, but never got much love for that accomplishment. I suppose we could blame it all on the trouble with pronunciation, but his signing to El Diablos in the offseason was also regarded as the least impactful of all former Punchout signings. We can definitely blame that on severe oversight. Despite the hour drive before him, "Laddy" has been at four of five El Diablos series this year and is clearly making his presence known with a "Devils when we win, fighting chickens when we lose" swagger. While he may have taken a step back in home run production with teammates picking up the slack, both his average and on-base percentage are higher than they were in 2012. That's LaDouceur. Enunciate.

1. Whiteford Wicked Aces  (8-0, 1st in Ringler)
Aces open up their renovated new home this week vs the 2011 champion Ducks.
2. El Diablos  (8-2, 1st in Garcia)     1
El Diablos are having fun on and off the field. Big rematch this week vs. the Warriors.
3. Westside Warriors  (7-1, 2nd in Ringler)     1
Warriors are back on the windy Den this week. You gotta expect they would be happy going 3-1 once again against Belgian/El Diablos.
4. Holy Balls  (4-4, 3rd in Ringler)
To no one's surprise this team is 4-4 and is a middle of the road team. Don't sleep on them though.
5. Islanders  (3-9, t-3rd in Garcia)     3
Islanders had themselves a very nice weekend going 3-1. Guess you need to take them seriously now.
6. Belgian Wiffles  (4-10, 2nd in Garcia)     1
Season is already halfway over for the team in yellow and brown. Looks like they be playing the spoiler role this year.
7. Ducks  (2-6, t-3rd in Garcia)     1
These guys have the ability to turn their season around. Losing two games to the Islanders has got to sting though.
8. King Friday  (2-6, 4th in Ringler)     3
King Friday is back in familiar territory. Maybe some home cooking is what they need.

Matthias Danczafus

Coffee Time
by Carl Coffee

Every member of WSEM has a story of how they joined the league. Some stories are interesting, some are lame, and for a small few, some are astounding. For one member, a man by the name of Matthias Danczafus, his story is miraculous.

June of 1992 was like any month for the Amish people located in Berks County, PA. The days were long, which meant more daylight for chores and cropping. A loving couple, Hermathis and Mary Ellen were expecting their eleventh child, and he was born healthy and happy. Matthias was a joy to Hermathis and Mary Ellen, and he grew up excited to follow in his father’s footsteps.

When Matthias turned 16, he was given the opportunity to experience rumspringa, which is a period of adolescence for some members of the Amish community during which a youth temporarily leaves the community to experience life in the outside world. While many of his peers went to New York City or Philadelphia, Matthias went to Shelton, CT, the home of Wiffle ®.

You see, although nobody in his community ever knew about it, Matthias had a secret love for Wiffleball. One day when he was 11 years old, Matthias wandered off and found some young boys around his age playing this silly game at a neighboring farm. They explained to him it was called Wiffleball, and they let him join in. In Matthias’ first at bat, this 11 year old Amish boy hit a home run over a barn that these kids never saw happen before. Matthias was also a pitching phenom. He pitched a perfect game in his first ever appearance on a mound. He invented a pitch called the ‘Amish Answer’. It was a combination fastball/curveball/slider/riser/knuckle/sinker. It was unhittable.

Up until 2008 Matthias secretly kept playing with the neighboring boys until it was time for his rumspringa. He packed up his horse and buggy, and made the long pilgrimage to Shelton. During his voyage, Matthias dreamed of what his new life would be like on the outside world. His Wiffleball playing friends told him he was the best they have ever seen, and Matthias started to believe it. Unfortunately, 50 miles away from Shelton, tragedy struck.

It was early in the morning, and Matthias was ready to make one last leg to get to Shelton. It was still dark out, and unfortunately the reflector on the back of his buggy had fallen off. A speeding truck never saw him, and Matthias was thrown into a river and floated away. His body was never found after seven days of searching, and he was pronounced dead.

Matthias floated and floated until he somehow ended up on the shores of Lake Erie in southeast Michigan. He had pretty bad amnesia and had very little recollection of his previous life. He didn’t remember his days living as an Amish, nor did he remember his love for wiffleball. He somehow remembered parts of his name, and told people his name was Matt Dancza. Matt was able to live a somewhat normal life for the next five years working at Meijer and making new friends.

It is now 2013 and as you can see, Matt is playing Wiffleball again for the Belgian Wiffles. Nobody knows if he will ever remember his old life. What we do know is he is once again playing the sport he loved. He has even pitched a little bit. We haven’t seen the ‘Amish Answer’ yet, but when we do, I am sure it will be miraculous.

Week 4 Twatter Power Rankings

Coffee Time

1. Whiteford Wicked Aces  (8-0, 1st in Ringler)
You used to be able to say this team was average offensively, not so much anymore.td>
2. Westside Warriors  (7-1, 2nd in Ringler)     1
Very nice split with El Diablos. Will that earn them the respect they deserve?
3. El Diablos  (6-2, 1st in Garcia)     1
These guys will run away with the Garcia division. In other news, Skinner is human.
4. Holy Balls  (2-4, t-3rd in Ringler)     1
The coveted four seed should be a fun race to watch. Right now, I think it's Holy Balls to lose.
5. King Friday  (2-4, t-3rd in Ringler)     1
Not playing in week 4 bumped up these guys one spot. If they avoid a sweep this week, things will get very interesting.
6. Ducks  (2-4, 2nd in Garcia)     2
Ducks have had a tough schedule so far but should be 4-4 after this week.
7. Belgian Wiffles  (3-7, 3rd in Garcia)
Six game losing streak for team ‘Shock the World’. Nice new field though.
8. Islanders  (0-8, 4th in Garcia)
The Islanders take the road for the next four series and have some very winnable games in that mix.

A Way Too Early Look at Rookie of the Year

Your Junk my Happy Zone
by Brandon Corbett

First of all, it is incredibly early to try and divine an end of the year award. Second, that is what makes it the best time to try! Quite a few rookies have put in a good performance or two early on this season. John Sharlow had a seven hit, 6 RBI series the second time he took a Wiffleball field. Thomas "Bones" DeMaria leads the Warriors in AVG, OBP, and SLG%, while yet to give up a run or hit on the mound. Honestly, Bones' numbers may well make him the front-runner for the 2013 RotY at this point. However, I am going to either praise or lambaste Carl for his preseason predictions and focus solely on those three rookies in this article.

Mark Brannan Keifer Haffey Nicco Lollio
Offense Pitching Offense Pitching Offense Pitching
AVG:   .200 ERA:   3.81 AVG:   .273 ERA:   0.00 AVG:   .500 ERA:   0.00
SLG%:   .250 WHIP:   1.81 SLG%:   .273 WHIP:   0.33 SLG%:   .714 WHIP:   1.52
HR:   0 K:   51 HR:   0 K:   29 HR:   1 K:   2
OBP:   .500 BB:   20 OBP:   .273 BB:   1 OBP:   .611 BB:   1
RBI:   4 IP:   21 RBI:   0 IP:   12 RBI:   4 IP:   0.2
SB:   1 W:   1 SB:   0 W:   2 SB:   4 W:   0
Perfect Game

The first thing to jump out at me when looking at their numbers is Lollio's offensive column. His .500 average is nearly double the closest follower considered here (and .125 points higher than DeMaria, as well). His .714 slugging percentage more than doubles both (and nearly doubles Bones' .375). Nicco is also the only one of these rookies to have taken a round-trip after three weeks. And although Brannan is able to match him in total RBI, Lollio once again steals a deciding advantage with his four stolen bases.

Equally impressive on the other side of the coin, though, are Haffey's pitching numbers. Not only is Kiefer one of four WSEM pitchers with a 0.00 (along with his Westside teammate, DeMaria), but his 0.33 WHIP is best in the league after three weeks (just ahead of DeMaria at 0.44). Kiefer's 2.42 KpI may only be third among rookies, narrowly edged out by Bones and Brannan at 2.44 and 2.43, respectively, but his 29.0 K/BB ratio is far and away the best in the league: making his strike outs much more impressive. Oh yeah, and Kiefer's already tossed a perfect game!

If the coin is in the other hand and you look at RotY like MVP while thinking of MVP in the context of "most valuable to his team," then Brannan may well be your rookie. He is the workhorse of the Belgian rotation, having pitched 21 of 43 innings, and registers the lowest ERA of their pitchers with 2+ innings thrown. He was pulled from his Opening Night start due to a leg injury, but luckily was able to return a week later. As mentioned above, Mark's 2.43 KpI is remarkable for a rookie pitcher. His most impressive performance this season has to be holding the Aces scoreless through 9 innings to give Belgian a chance to upset one the favorites.

Over the last two WSEM seasons, the RotY has been won by Snow and Tomlinson with impressive offensive numbers. Lollio is obviously riding the train to accomplish that for a third straight season. Haffey, Brannan, and DeMaria, meanwhile, are banking on showing that rookies can also capitalize on pitching's domination of the game. As early as it is, do not for one second think RotY is all these players are after: their sites are locked on the greater jewels of the league and charging past the veterans of WSEM to get them.

Week 3 Twatter Power Rankings

Coffee Time
by Carl Coffee

1. Whiteford Wicked Aces  (4-0, t-1st in Ringler)     1
Evan Bortmas will be around for their first eight games to become playoff eligible. The MVP seems very comfortable wearing Aces colors.
2. El Diablos  (5-1, 1st in Garcia)     1
They got the job done without their ace Skinner. Diablos vs. Warriors will be a classic. Mark my words.
3. Westside Warriors  (4-0, t-1st in Ringler)     1
The NWLA ranked the Warriors 10th in the country, but even Shore thinks the ranking it too high. Their first true test is coming up.
4. Ducks  (2-2, 2nd in Garcia)     2
The Ducks didn’t even play and they moved up two spots. Rumor is this team is going to a 2-2-1 pitching rotation. Smart or dumb?
5. Holy Balls  (2-4, t-3rd in Ringler)     2
They wanted to be 3-3 at this point, but they can’t be too mad at 2-4. Their next four games are against Friday and Islanders.
6. King Friday  (2-4, t-3rd in Ringler)     2
Hewlett continues to pound the ball as Friday finally got in the win column. Will Cosby ever show up though?
7. Belgian Wiffles  (3-5, 3rd in Garcia)     2
The once united Belgian roster seems to be falling apart. Mark Brannan is pitching well though, he just needs run support.
8. Islanders  (0-6, 4th in Garcia)     1
Fun team to play, good attitude on the field, but their first wins won’t come in Week 4.
